(3.125 lb/ft) of peak torque, and 2,710 to 16,305 rpm, with ultra-smooth velocity and virtually no eddy current or hysteresis losses. Medium and large ThinGap motors using similar concepts are available up to 50 lb/ft peak torque and 6,000 rpm.

ThinGap  laminated copper dc brushless motors has a design without magnet wire windings; cooling and continuous torque increase with rpm.ThinGap, based in Ventura, CA, has designed the motors without magnet wire windings, with no measurable cogging and a high peak torque-to-continuous torque ratio. Precision etched copper sheets are laminated into a free-standing, lightweight, composite coil, about 3 mm thick, without iron backing.

Open-frame construction combines with the inner and outer rotating irons to allow designers wide latitude in mechanical integration with the surrounding mechanism. Customers can fabricate and install custom shafts, solid or hollow, for inside or outside the rotor.

The design allows free air to flow on both sides of the coil. Cooling and torque increase at higher rpm. Without magnetic saturation, continuous torque is only limited by cooling. Active cooling can extend safe operating ambient current (SOAC) to higher torque levels, the company said.

2012 Salary Survey

In a year when manufacturing continued to lead the economic rebound, it makes sense that plant manager bonuses rebounded. Plant Engineering’s annual Salary Survey shows both wages and bonuses rose in 2012 after a retreat the year before.

Average salary across all job titles for plant floor management rose 3.5% to $95,446, and bonus compensation jumped to $15,162, a 4.2% increase from the 2010 level and double the 2011 total, which showed a sharp drop in bonus.
