Free online tool aids wireless instrumentation network planning
The Smart Wireless planning tool from Emerson helps users design a customized WirelessHART network.
Emerson Process Management now offers an online planning tool to help process industry facilities get started with wireless. This free web-based application allows users to upload an image of their plant in order to design a customized wireless network using IEC-approved WirelessHART network standards.
Backed by Emerson’s experience in wireless network applications, this tool encourages users to test plant network configurations and application possibilities in their facility before investing in wireless technology. Not only can users set specific limitations, parameters, and standards for their network, they can also verify their configuration against proven industry best practices and gain recommendations for increasing network robustness found in the IEC 62591 WirelessHART System Engineering Guide from the HART Communications Foundation.
Users can also save their network configuration for future reference and revision. If the facility chooses to invest in Smart Wireless, the saved network configuration can be imported to the AMS Wireless Snap-On application for network management and predictive diagnostics.

Annual Salary Survey
After almost a decade of uncertainty, the confidence of plant floor managers is soaring. Even with a number of challenges and while implementing new technologies, there is a renewed sense of optimism among plant managers about their business and their future.
The respondents to the 2014 Plant Engineering Salary Survey come from throughout the U.S. and serve a variety of industries, but they are uniform in their optimism about manufacturing. This year’s survey found 79% consider manufacturing a secure career. That’s up from 75% in 2013 and significantly higher than the 63% figure when Plant Engineering first started asking that question a decade ago.
