EC: µIPM Power Modules
Power - Motor control: The highly integrated, ultra-compact, PM power modules are designed for high efficiency appliance and light industrial applications including compressor drives for refrigeration, pumps for heating and water circulation, air-conditioning fans, and automation systems. IR's new µIPM family represents the latest example of IR's commitment to developing energy saving products and solutions and provides the engineering community with simpler, easier and more efficient ways to design and release products that meet customers' needs and regulatory standards.
Traditional IPM solutions for the 60-200 W inverterized motor drive market have required relatively inefficient large construction or the use of an external heat sink to achieve satisfactory thermal performance. This approach has made the complete integration of the motor controller within the motor system difficult and cumbersome and often uneconomical, thereby making it unsuitable for widespread adoption. The new alternative approach (patent pending) pioneered by IR for this market segment, enables designers to solve the technical challenges of designing advanced energy saving solutions in line with the most recent energy standards for fans (heating and ventilation) or pumps (water circulation).

By using an innovative packaging solution, the µIPM family delivers a new benchmark in device size, offering up to a 60% smaller footprint than existing 3-phase motor control power ICs.
IR's µIPM product family offers a scalable power solution with common pin-out and package size. Featuring the most rugged and efficient high-voltage FredFET MOSFET switches specifically optimized for variable frequency drives and IR's most advanced high-voltage driver ICs, the µIPM product family offers dc current ratings ranging from 2 A to 4 A and voltages of 250 V and 500 V.

Annual Salary Survey
After almost a decade of uncertainty, the confidence of plant floor managers is soaring. Even with a number of challenges and while implementing new technologies, there is a renewed sense of optimism among plant managers about their business and their future.
The respondents to the 2014 Plant Engineering Salary Survey come from throughout the U.S. and serve a variety of industries, but they are uniform in their optimism about manufacturing. This year’s survey found 79% consider manufacturing a secure career. That’s up from 75% in 2013 and significantly higher than the 63% figure when Plant Engineering first started asking that question a decade ago.
