EC: MP2600iec Single Axis Controller

Machine and Embedded Control - PACs - motion: Yaskawa America Inc., MP2600iec Single Axis Controller. The MP2600iec provides single axis control compliant with IEC 61131-3 and PLCopen standards for Yaskawa's Sigma-5 servo system. This is a Control Engineering 2011 Engineers' Choice (EC) nominee.

MP2600iec Single Axis Controller - The MP2600iec provides single axis control compliant with IEC61131-3 and PLCopen standards for Yaskawa's Sigma-5 servo system. This is a Control Engineering 2011 Engineers' Choice (EC) nominee. The MP2600iec provides motion control of 1 or 1.5 axes and is reportedly one of the first in the industry to provide full IEC 61131-3 functionality in a single axis controller. The controller extends the MP2000iec product family, which now includes three controllers covering 1 to 16 axes.

The MP2600iec motion controller supports all five IEC 61131-3 programming languages: Ladder Diagram, Function Block, Structured Text, Sequential Function Chart and Instruction List. The MP2600iec motion controller programming software, MotionWorks IEC, comes equipped with application specific function blocks that adhere to the PLCopen standard. These pre-programmed blocks provide all of the standard functionality required for most motion control applications, eliminating the need for custom programming.

For many applications, the MP2600iec motion controller can provide complete control and monitoring, eliminating the need for a separate PLC or other low-level controller. The MP2600iec motion controller provides control and monitoring via 15 discrete inputs, 11 discrete outputs, one analog input and one analog output. All of these inputs and outputs can be controlled via execution of any of the five IEC 61131-3 programming languages.

Interface to automation, monitoring and control systems external to the machine are provided by the discrete and analog I/O, or via the EtherNet/IP and Modbus/TCP digital networks. An optional OPC server allows for the transfer of real time data over Ethernet from the machine process to the factory network. The MP2600iec motion controller also includes full Web server capability, allowing access to the controller from any standard web browser.

Annual Salary Survey

After almost a decade of uncertainty, the confidence of plant floor managers is soaring. Even with a number of challenges and while implementing new technologies, there is a renewed sense of optimism among plant managers about their business and their future.

The respondents to the 2014 Plant Engineering Salary Survey come from throughout the U.S. and serve a variety of industries, but they are uniform in their optimism about manufacturing. This year’s survey found 79% consider manufacturing a secure career. That’s up from 75% in 2013 and significantly higher than the 63% figure when Plant Engineering first started asking that question a decade ago.
