CombustionOne is an application solution for improving and sustaining combustion assets like fired heaters and boilers to help users comply with API556 recommended practices. This is a Control Engineering 2012 Engineers’ Choice finalist.CombustionOne from Yokogawa combines measurement, control, safety, and procedural automation to fired heaters to help users increase safety, improve thermal efficiency, and comply with the newer standards and practices. CombustionOne unites a true diode laser spectroscopy (TDLS) analyzer with a dedicated control system and a safety system certified to meet FM NFPA and SIL 2 standards. The TDLS measures O2, CO in the radiant section for higher accuracy measurement used by a controller to produce a safer burner control and greater overall heater efficiency. The safety shutdown system reduces the risk of explosion. Also included is a modular procedural automation application to help operators in the startup/shutdown procedures. The solution is modular, scalable according to the size of the fired heater, and easily adaptable to any heater configuration.

2012 Salary Survey

In a year when manufacturing continued to lead the economic rebound, it makes sense that plant manager bonuses rebounded. Plant Engineering’s annual Salary Survey shows both wages and bonuses rose in 2012 after a retreat the year before.

Average salary across all job titles for plant floor management rose 3.5% to $95,446, and bonus compensation jumped to $15,162, a 4.2% increase from the 2010 level and double the 2011 total, which showed a sharp drop in bonus.
