Fun on Wall St.
January 22, 2008

1. Stocks and bonds: The self-fulfilling prophecy of a recession came to pass Monday and Tuesday. We talked about it in general terms enough, and sure enough, Europe and Asia went ka-bloohey Monday while we took the day off, and then Tuesday, the stock market dropped 400 points at the open. And then, as it seems always happens, the stock market righted itself after the Fed cut interest rates and things were back to whatever normal looks like today.
2. Perhaps the key lesson: Can be found on the cover of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
3. The good news: Is that we can now focus on the real issues in America and not the ones made up by self-righteous commentators on cable networks beginning with CN.
4. Some things to really be working on: I'm in New York at the AHR Expo, and a press event earlier today talked about the changes in refrigerants to be used starting in 2010. The R-22 refrigerant will be phased out over the next dozen years, and the supply of R-22 for existing equipment will be sharply restricted. So that's why one of the most disturbing things about DuPont's press conference at the AHR Expo is that 75% of all installs currently use R-22, and 75% of all NEW installs use R-22. People aren't getting the message. Maybe this will help: only 100 weeks left...
5. Super Bowl on the mind... I'm in New York this week. I'm in Boston next week. I will have had just about enough of the Super Bowl by then. It's already start in NYC, thanks to this wildly over-the-top New York Post story.
