IEEE energy efficiency forum in Baltimore

-- Plant Engineering, 8/1/2007 6:38:00 AM

The IEEE Industry Applications Society is sponsoring the IEEE Industrial Energy Efficiency Workshop to be held October 22-23, 2007 at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center (formerly Wyndham Inner Harbor) in Baltimore. This workshop will provide information to help manufacturers and processors save energy and reduce costs. Savings are possible for food processors to semiconductor manufacturers.

Electric motor driven systems represent 25% of all electricity used and over 60% within industry. Recent US Department of Energy reports show that savings of 30% or more are possible using existing technologies such as premium efficient motors and adjustable speed drives.

Speakers will include ENERGY STAR partners from Toyota, Frito-Lay, California Portland Cement, DuPont and Weyerhaeuser outlining their company’s energy management programs. Several of these companies have received the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award.

The US Department of Energy Industrial Technology Program and ENERGY STAR Industrial Programs will be introduced. Several utilities will speak about the support they offer to industrial customers.

Multiple education tracks are planned for the second day. One track is for Energy Managers on how to start and manage an energy program. A second track for plant managers on “best practices” and tools for energy analysis. The third is for engineers and discusses process optimization and monitoring.

Additional topics are:

  • NEMA Premium® efficient motors & adjustable speed drives
  • Pumping systems energy savings and analysis
  • Electric motor management and repair “best practices”
  • Lighting and transformers
  • Future of energy supplies, volatility and trends
  • Global energy standards
  • ANSI / ISO Energy standards
  • Introduction to Energy Service Companies
