SME honors Intel, Colorado schools for introducing girls to engineering

The Education Foundation of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers awarded its annual $5,000 "Building the Future Award" to a collaboration between Colorado Springs School District 11 and Intel Corporation. The award was presented at the SME annual meeting in Baltimore.
The GREAT (Girls Get Ready to Explore Academics and Technology) summer science camp for middle-school girls was part of Gateway To Technology, a hands-on, activity-based sequence of courses designed to show students how math, science and technology are used to solve everyday problems.
During the summer, girls from East Middle School are invited to attend the three-day GREAT camp. The girls study math, science, technology and engineering in a project-based, hands-on setting at the University of Colorado, where they live on campus and are taught by professional women engineers, scientists and teachers. The tuition-free camp is made possible with leveraged funds from the Women's Foundation of Colorado, Agilent, Intel and other community organizations.
