Plant Engineering named co-sponsor of safety award

By Staff -- Plant Engineering, 7/1/2005

PLANT ENGINEERING magazine has been selected as one of the Outreach Collaborators for the international Robert W. Campbell Award, which honors companies that successfully integrate safety, health and environmental management principles into their business operations. The award is hosted by the National Safety Council and underwritten by Exxon Mobil Corporation. Winner of the 2005 Robert W. Campbell Award will be presented at the opening session of Council's Annual Congress & Expo in Orlando on Sept. 21. The award is named for an early 20th century safety pioneer and humanitarian who recognized the benefits of safety in business.

"Our readers tell us that safety and health issues are important to their employees, to their financial bottom line, and to their role as responsible citizens," said Jim Langhenry, publisher of PLANT ENGINEERING. "We are honored to be associated with the Campbell Award, because it honors companies that best achieve their goal of a safe and healthy workplace. We hope the message of safety resonates with our readers."

"The award aims to raising industry awareness about the clear benefits of SH&E to both the employees and to the company's bottom line is a goal of the Campbell Award. Through the Award, we hope to foster the sharing of leading edge SH&E management systems and best practices for educational purposes worldwide." said Dr. Mei-Li Lin, Executive Director of Research and Statistical Services for the National Safety Council.

"We are very pleased to have PLANT ENGINEERING join us to carry the message of the Robert W. Campbell Award to the manufacturing sector, and we encourage this important segment of industry to participate in the Campbell Award competition for 2006."

The first Robert W. Campbell Award was presented in 2004 to Noble Corporation, a leading provider of diversified services for the oil and gas industry. Prospective companies compete for the award and undergo an extensive application process that details key aspects of their SH&E programs. An international panel of independent reviewers evaluates each application based on management, technical and behavioral integration of safety, health, and environmental management principles.

Among the international sponsors of the Campbell Award are the International Safety Council, The Conference Board, the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, and safety and health organizations in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Central America, China, Colombia, Germany, Korea and Taiwan.
