Safety First...

In all cases, even if not specifically mentioned in the writeups, verify that the tip does not violate any relevant code, standard, or practice. Always use the appropriate safety equipment and procedures when applying the maintenance tips.

Hide a key

Problem: A spare key for a locked office, storeroom, or similar area must be kept out of sight, yet accessible. Where can the key be stored?

Solution: Tape the key inside the switch plate on a convenient light switch. The key is readily accessible and out of sight.

This tip was originally published in September 1999.

Curing stubbornness

Problem: Some nuts are often stubborn and no amount of penetrating oil and manual effort seem to help get them off. What else can be done?

Solution: For only the most difficult jobs, put iodine on the nuts and bolts and wait awhile. A wrench should then be able to get them off. Remember to put a drip pan or bucket underneath and wear rubber gloves when applying iodine or tincture of iodine.

This tip was originally published in September 1998.

Carrying cords and hoses

Problem: Hauling around extension cords, air lines, or hoses can be a problem since they often tangle or simply get in the way. Is there an easy way to carry these items?

Solution: Coil the items in a 5-gal plastic bucket. They are much easier to manage and carry that way.

This tip was originally published in July 2001.
