Problem: A pipe is leaking, and it is difficult to get to the valve to shut off flow. How can the leak be stopped until the valve can be reached and flow stopped?

Solution: Wrap a piece of rubber around the leaking pipe. Clamp both ends around the pipe. Clamp some of the rubber around the nozzle of a CO2 fire extinguisher. Cut a slit opposite the extinguisher. Fire the extinguisher, freezing the contents of the pipe and temporarily stopping the leak.

Problem: A 12-V portable air compressor comes with a plug that fits a cigarette lighter. If the only source of power is the battery of a lift truck, how can the air compressor be powered?

Solution: Strip a short section of both wires about 12 in. from the plug. Attach a set of terminal clamps, with protective sleeves, to the wires. Now either a battery or a cigarette lighter can power the compressor.

Problem: A leak has developed on a flat plant roof. Due to scheduling and weather problems the leak can't be fixed right now. What can be done in the way of a temporary patch?

Solution: Locate the approximate location of the leak. Spread some oil absorbent (clay granules) on the leak while it is raining. The absorbent will flow to the leak and temporarily seal it for about 3 months.
