Wire corrosion

This is in regards to the waterproofing wire connections solution in the November issue. If you do not use the correct type of silicone sealant meant for electronic applications, the ordinary household type will cause corrosion of the wires. — Jim Epstein

Your solution on how to waterproof wire connections recommended using silicone sealant to seal the nut. Most silicones give off acetic acids as part of their curing mechanism. The presence of acetic acid will actually promote corrosion rather than help protect against it. The tip is still valid, however, if neutral-cure silicone is used instead of acetoxy silicone. An easy way to tell acetoxy silicone from a neutral-cure is the absence of the odor of acetic acid (vinegar). — Tony O'Connell

Ralph Dewey's suggestion to fill wire nuts with silicone sealant is great so long as you use silicone approved for electrical devices. Most silicones contain or evolve acids while curing that will attack wires. Small gages can actually be eaten in two. — Craig Austin
