Software improves workplace chemical inventory management

By Plant Engineering Staff -- Plant Engineering, 7/12/2001 1:00:00 AM

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. - Contributing to increased workplace safety, Dolphin Software launched Comply Plus Web 2.5, a Web-based application that revolutionizes the critical task of managing workplace chemical inventories.

Comply Plus Web 2.5 combines Dolphin's existing Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) management system software with a new Web-based chemical inventory management and tracking component.  Electronic access to MSDS and chemical inventory information increases an organization's ability to quickly respond to chemical-related incidents as well as cost-effectively manage associated material procurement.

"Understandably, companies struggle with how to get a handle on the 10,000 to 40,000 chemical substances that they may have in their workplace. With Comply Plus 2.5, companies can track every chemical substance that is purchased from the time it enters a facility until its final use or disposition," said Mark Wysong, president and CEO of Dolphin Software. Comply Plus 2.5 tracks where chemicals are stored, what quantities are on hand and being used, expiration dates, and disposal status.

The chemical inventory module of Comply Plus 2.5 assigns each chemical substance purchased by a company a part number, catalogs it according to composition and expiration dates and allows for chemical labeling. Once labeled, a handheld "Palm-type device" with a barcode reader may also be used to track the substance's life cycle at the company, including documentation during physical inventory.  The system also records vendor and purchasing history for accounting and procurement purposes.

The MSDS component gives employees direct access to chemical and safety information in accordance with employee "right-to-know" laws. The combination of the two creates a fully customized, completely automated system where individuals can search and retrieve information 24 hours a day from any PC with Internet access.
